Robot assisted radio-guided prostate cancer surgery

24 Jul 2019

Professor Stricker and his team performed the first robot assisted radio-guided prostate cancer surgery in Australia.

They are conducting a clinical trial in collaboration with the Netherlands Cancer Institute, the University Hospital Leiden and the Martini clinic in Hamburg Germany and Eurorad. Prof Stricker stated that the aim was to improve cancer specific outcomes and reduce side effects for men undergoing prostate cancer surgery. This new technique involves the injection of a technetium radioactive isotope which gets taken up by cancer cells around the prostate. Detection of this isotope during the robotic operation shows where the cancer has spread too.
